By the time we reach adulthood, most of us are familiar with the tiny spider like veins that can appear on the face and legs. Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are small veins that are blue, purple or red in color and reside close to the surface of the skin. There are many reasons as to why spider veins form—hormones, heredity, weight gain, trauma, certain medications and prolonged standing can all have an effect. And while these veins still remain connected to the deeper venous system, once they appear they serve no specific function or purpose. Because of this, many men and women search for ways to remove them. Knowing why your spider veins appear and finding the right treatment to remove them will help you to achieve a clearer, more uniform complexion that lasts.
As there are so many individuals that currently have spider veins (it is estimated that close to 50% of adult females suffer with some degree of spider veins) several different treatments have been developed to combat them. At Synergy Skin & Laser Center , Spider veins are most commonly treated using Alma Lasers. The Nd:YAG 1064 laser hand piece coagulates and destroys cosmetically unacceptable blood vessels and leg veins without the use of chemicals or needles. Laser Vein Removal procedures are very effective in treating small veins, spider veins, and telangectasias (small, superficial blood vessels that become visible because they are dilated). The majority of those red or purple surface veins can be removed or reduced with little or no discomfort with laser therapy.
Laser Vein Removal Procedure
The procedure may take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on the size and number of treatment areas, and will go as follows:
A local or topical anesthetic may be applied to the treatment area.
The type of laser will be chosen depending on the type and size of vein or red spot.
The laser is applied to the vein or red spot, sending out very strong bursts of light, which cause the vein or red spot to shrink and fade without damaging the surrounding skin.
Multiple treatments are often necessary. Depending on severity, leg veins may require two to five treatments, while red spots can typically be treated in just one to two visits.
Laser Vein Removal Recovery
The appearance of treated vessels will change shades, turning from blue and purple into light red, eventually disappearing in two to six weeks.Smaller veins and red spots may appear less visible or may have disappeared completely after treatment. Other veins, especially larger ones, may appear darker and more visible at first, but these will fade over the next two to six weeks. Those with a tendency towards vascular problems will most likely require additional treatments.
Changes in skin pigmentation, either darkening or lightening of the skin, can also occur but this should fade within one to three months. Patients usually experience little postoperative pain and there is minimal follow-up care necessary. Light activities can be resumed immediately. Do not engage in vigorous exercising and avoid hot tubs for at least 24 hours after procedure.. though the treatment area should be protected from sun exposure for four to six weeks after treatment. You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a few days.
